The Book in the Stump
The original 1972 Dutch edition of Willem Frederik Hermans’ book Nooit Meir Slapen (Beyond Sleep) sunk into a stump of birch wood. The first English edition, published in 1978, was translated from a later version of the book, which had been extensively revised by the author rendering the original text inaccessible to English readers.
